Welcome!

I, God, welcome you to my blog!

The good book says only God is good, so it seems to me somebody needs to step up.

I hope you enjoy reading this, the Jesse Journal, as much as I have enjoyed writing it. Please feel free to subscribe, write me an email, request that I write about any particular topic you may want my perspective on, send a prayer, click on the charity link, or donate money to my bicycle fund! Have fun!

Your pal, Jess

F.Y.I. There are about 2200 posts..

Here's a quote from Fyodor Dostoevsky to start things off right: Love the animals, love the plants, love everything. If you love everything, you will perceive the divine mystery in things. Once you perceive it, you will begin to comprehend it better every day. And you will come at last to love the whole world with an all-embracing love.

my mom asked, what did the Buddha teach (short summary)?  (I just read Walpola Rahula's book).  I replied,  morality and right living;  how to end suffering and attain bliss (realization, enlightenment, Nirvana);  mental discipline and meditation and equanimity.   Joy is big!  Monks are known for being a happy lot.  Things that lead to suffering are:  thirst, desire, greed, craving, attachment, clinging.   Aversion, hatred, ill-will.  Ignorance, delusion.  Mental development leads to dispassion, mindfulness, liberation, mental health, equilibrium, tranquility.  There are lists of defilements, and virtues and perfections.  Pacifism and non-violence, of course.  "Not to do any evil, to cultivate good, to purify one's mind, this is the Teaching of the Buddhas."  ("Buddha" means "awake", in addition to the founder, and others who achieved high levels of enlightenment).

How'd I do?  There's a lot I could have said.

There are 2 points of Buddhist philosophy/doctrine I disagree with:  I still believe in sense-pleasures.  And I don't believe in rebirths, (no matter what your karma).   Once you're dead, that's it, as far as I can tell.   Maybe I'm deluded on both counts.   But I don't think so.   I still believe in sex and having (a) child(ren) and love and family and being social (vs. seclusion in a cave or forest).  Sorry, Buddha.
