Ontological argument

God's take on it:

The OA goes as follows:

He defines God as "a being than which no greater can be conceived," and argues that such a being must exist in the mind, even in that of the person who denies the existence of God.  From this, he suggests, if the greatest possible being exists in the mind, it must also exist in reality, because if it existed only in the mind, then an even greater being must be possible - one who exists both in mind and in reality.  Therefore, God exists.  

MY REPLY

The mind exists in reality.  Anything existing in the mind is therefore existent in reality (the concept exists).  Just because a concept exists, doesn’t mean that conceived is real.

So,

A being than which no greater can be conceived, is a conception.   The being of that being is only a conception.  Just because something is called a “being” doesn’t mean it exists.

Such a being must exist in the mind, the argument goes.   (any specific) Conceptions don’t necessarily exist in the mind (for example, not everyone has the conception of a unicorn, or groodlethwunk).

The greatest possible being is an interesting definition of God -  “Greatest” is subjective - The best looking, or the best lover, or the best at chess, or the best thinker…

So,

Everyone has their own personal God (The most good, say, for each individual).

But that doesn’t make their God existent.

I conceive of a God who abolishes all hell.

Just because I need this to exist doesn’t make it so:

Suffering exists.

I conceive of a God who, like a genie, grants wishes (but as many as I want).  Freedom, super-powers, immortality (non-aging, instant healing, ability to turn off pain). Or, if not invulnerable, born again (at a specific age, time and place, in a specific form).  Or, at least, love and happiness, health and wealth, dying well (content, fulfilled).   I can pray to this God -   And see what happens… God is reality testing…God is a type of science.    Theology is a sphere of science.

Just because almost everyone says something exists, doesn’t make it so.

Maybe there is a most powerful being.

Or a most good being.

Or a most loving being.

And maybe all these things are in the same person.

The Greatest Existent possible would be the most everything else, too.

Which, to me, makes the existence of God highly unlikely.

An atheist denies the existence of God, 

doesn't believe in God, 

and doesn't believe God exists
