Of course, we’re all going to die.  We’re all in the same boat.  No worries.  We’re all going to heaven.  No more pain.  Ashes to ashes, dust to dust.  So enjoy life, while you’re alive.  You only live once.  Have fun!  Seize the day.  Be all you can be.  Do what you enjoy.  No regrets.

Be good.  Freedom.  Don’t be bad. Guilt.  Nobody is any better than anyone else.  We’re all equal.   Respect.  Stay engaged, alive, happy.  Stay curious, stay hungry.  Be strong, fit, healthy, well, sane.  Make the world a better place.  Love thy neighbor.  

Work hard, give it your all.  Early to bed, early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise.  To be rich is glorious.  Go to bed tired, wake refreshed.   Don’t oversleep.  Stay motivated, focused, keep your eyes on the prize.  Work hard, party hard.  Let the good times roll.  No one lives forever!  Relax, take it easy, go slow.  May the force be with you!

Music, comedy, books, meditation, writing, sex, massage, restaurants, travel, exercise, dance - ingredients of the good life.   Cleanliness is next to godliness.  Look sharp.  Dress to impress.  Look good, feel good.  Showers, swimming, surfing, hot tubs - water refreshes.  Take a dip, take the plunge.  Everyone is rich at your local library!  Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body.   You can escape in a book, or a movie, or in music.  Meditation is mind-maintenance.

What’s Yours?

You are what you eat.  Eat healthy and well.  Drink water.  I like cold water with lemon.  Vegetarian, no alcohol, minimal sugar.  I have a powerbar every day, and mushroom coffee, and oatmeal for breakfast.  Daily multivitamin and fish oil.  A 2 scoop serving of protein powder.  You can get free food from several places in Berkeley.  This frees up money for charity.   My favorite charities are MSF (doctors without borders), MFA (mercy for animals), and DFLA (democrats for life of america).   The UN deserves support, too (e.g. UNICEF, UNHCR).

Exercise every day.   You should sweat.  You can do a lot at home.  I have a jumprope, and I do push-ups (120, with feet elevated).  I stretch in my room, regularly.  I get paid to walk dogs.  Walking is healthy.  And the dogs and owners love you.  So, a pretty good deal.  I bring, in addition to poop bags, a water bowl and water, and treats, in a pouch.  My apple watch lets me know when I’m halfway through a walk.  And I can ask it questions that occur to me while I’m walking.  Be strong, fit, healthy, well, and sane.  Lift weights.  Be on an improvement trajectory - or daily maintenance, at a minimum.  Swimming is my favorite exercise.  And having a pool to go to on a hot day is the best!  A woman once told me yoga is the path to God.  I’ve also read that atheism is a path to God!  Follow your bliss.

Volunteer!  I like planting trees, and sending books to prisoners.  A hobby is also good.  Like origami.  Or trivia.  Or reading.  Some people like arts and crafts.  I have trivial pursuit cards, and like to stay current with the J! Archive online (jeopardy questions).  I have a stack of unread books in my room, waiting, beckoning, calling, always.

Stay informed, vote, and pay your taxes.  I like reading the daily NYT and the weekly Economist.  Also, I get the WaPo 202 email (news for leaders), and 1440 (a compact daily news summary).  The Onion and Wikipedia are also fun news sources.  I also like The Christian Science Monitor and Foreign Affairs.  My Echo (amazon smart speaker, “alexa”) also gives a daily flash briefing.

Write, every single day.  To get better at writing, keep at it.  Emulate your favorite authors.  I like Lev Grossman, Neil Gaiman, Terry Pratchett, David Foster Wallace, Bill Bryson, Karen Armstrong… I like reading Bill Gates’ recommendations, and I have several “books of books” : Harold Bloom’s canon, 1001 Books, 501 Books.   I also have another book from the “must do before you die” series, with 10,001 songs to listen to (which pairs well with my Alexa).   There’s a places to go before you die, and movies, (neither of which I have).  I have a blog.  Blogging is free, if that’s your thing.  I hope to publish, too.

They say Love makes life worth living.  So don’t exclude it from your life, keep it possible, on your bucket list, never give up, it could be a numbers game.  You should have people in your life, don’t be a loner.   Friends and family and a support network.  Warmth and kindness and touch, like massage or something.  There are professional cuddlers.  And book clubs.

Travel and restaurants and movies and music and zoos and museums and ballet and opera and plays are all fun.   You can go far, even inside your own home: escape literature, children’s books, encyclopedia, ted talks, joe frank, courses online, youtube videos, etc.  I like the award winning books (newbery, hugo, year’s best series, etc.).  Standup comedy (and joke books) are also fun.  There are 3 encyclopedias I consult: Wikipedia, Brittanica, and World Book.  Brittanica is online, now (by subscription).  I always support Wikipedia when they ask.  World Book is available for checkout at the public library.  I plan on reading it.  I have a Chamber’s Dictionary and a good Atlas, which are also indispensable reference books.  YouTube has a cirque du soleil channel, and I like magic, parkour, self-defense, bodybuilding motivation, the occasional catholic mass.  I like the OYC (open Yale courseware).  I took an interesting class on the Philosophy of Death.  I’ve taken Cal classes, too.  And I surf Instagram and Pinterest.  I find reading the dictionary pleasurable.  New words are a delight.

Life would be much less fun without music.  There are cds at the library, but I have a (4.99/mo) subscription to Amazon music (Alexa).  Sometimes I wake up to music.  There’s music on YouTube, too.  I listen to college radio (wprb Princeton is my favorite).  Others are: kzsu, kcpr, whrb, wmbr, kalx.   I also listen to the weekly hearts of space broadcast on kalw, san francisco (10p-midnight, sundays).  And I just bought a woojer to make the music even better!

Enough sleep, like 8 hours, and naps, and meditation are vital, imo.  I don’t like to oversleep.   I like to wake up to standup comedy.  It’s fun to wake to “Time” by Pink Floyd, with its alarm clock sequence.  Routine, itself, makes life easier.  But the muscle (and brain) likes “muscle-confusion”, to keep you on your toes, always engaged, always learning, improving, having fun.  Meditation is mind-maintenance.  Equanimity and bliss, if you do it right.

Finally, Nature.  Get out into the great outdoors!  It refreshes the spirit.  Like the beach, or forest, or mountains.  Go hiking and camping.   Take a dip in a lake.  Or maybe surfing, rock-climbing, white water rafting, are more your style.  Animals belong in nature, and humans are animals!

A Note to any Would-Be Vampires!

All is well.  Everyone is a font of happiness.  A tall glass of water.  People want to get drunk.  People feel empty inside.  They want to drink life in.  They’re thirsty for change.  People suck.  Reality bites.  Life is draining.  The world is a vampire.  Good writers sometimes have biting wit. The Catholic Church has the actual blood of christ (eucharistic transubstantiated wine or grape juice) available for the faithful to drink, every single week (or day).  Sheeple believe in that shit.  Like it’s actual ichor.  “Vampires” who actually drink real blood are demons, doing something hellish.  But the sacrament is holy and necessary (wine, wafer, or both) for christians to become the corporate body of christ.  Because you are what you eat.  But if you don’t believe in God, or hell, then why not be a vampire.  Like the name of the game for the band Vampire Weekend.   Dabble in cannibalism, exsanguination, hematophagy.   If you’re bloodthirsty, why not make the metaphor real?  I mean, it’s nutritious, and if you don’t like the person, you can eat them.  Make a memory.  Enjoy life.  Vengeance is sweet.  Is your sweetheart’s heart really sweet?  You can add sugar. And you don’t have to subsist on blood, unless you really want to.  I mean, if you really enjoy it, and acquire a taste for it.  But good luck with not getting caught.  Dogs can track you down by smell.  There’s the potential for hair, fiber, dna matching.  Dentition can be verified by your dentist.  Cameras are everywhere.  Your phone leaves an electronic trail.  Bloodstains and spatter and your own blood, sweat, tears all will tell on you.  Psychics have visions.  And fingerprints, of course.  In other words, it’s hopeless, unless you don’t care, or are suicidal.   Then have at it, paint the town red.  All you have to fear is God Himself, lol.  Maybe even the devil.  I mean, maybe Satan is a servant of God, too: the warden of the prison of the afterlife (aka, hell).  Freedom is sweeter than blood.  Don’t do it.   Drink Christ, or red wine, or red gatorade, or sangria, or a bloody mary, or blood oranges, or a vial of some willing goth kid’s blood, or something (hospital waste?).  Eww.  I like being subversive, but the whole thing is disgusting, when you think about it, even if you are a sick and twisted blood-fetishist fuck, alright?  I know some Africans drink blood from their cattle.  That and eucharist is as far as I would ever go.  Well, there's a bloody steak, of course.  I've never had blood pudding.  Is it any good?

The Problem of Evil

 Theodicy

Historicity is historical authenticity.   Theodicy is theological idiocy.  We cannot know the mind of God, so we are speculative idiots, but I will not leave the topic unaddressed, and -being God- I will answer the problem (If God is AP, AK, PG, then how can there be evil and suffering?) for everyone: philosophers, the religious, regular people, and of course, for me, myself, and eye (Holy See? ha).

All-Powerful, All-Knowing, Perfectly Good: Pain exists because we need neurons to tell us when our body is damaged and needs to heal.   It is part of human makeup because we evolved it; it confers genetic advantage, reproductive success.  Suffering includes pain, but also grief, depression, broken-heart, loneliness, sickness, fear of death, nausea, disgust, revulsion, guilt, fear of hell, and dissatisfaction with self, others, the whole world, the system.  The compassion and sympathy of empaths with mirror neurons makes us feel other's pain, puts us in the shoes of others.  Our imaginations dream up all kinds of misery and nightmare.  Self-hatred and suicide, when malice turns inward, or the misery becomes unbearable, compels good people to seek escape.  If God doesn't believe in himself, and doesn't do what he could do to alleviate evil and suffering, could conceivably make a deity miserable, himself.  The depressed comedian, the crying clown, is not quite the godly psychic, who sees the costs and benefits of every act, and can therefore act in the long-term best interest.  The library is filled with creative explorations of different psyches, alternative histories, songs and memes and spells, other worlds, even criminal fantasies.  Who knows?  Maybe it's all the same, everything works out for the best, and there really is no evil, from this lofty perspective.  Even if God is dead, his corpse will feed the plants, just like everybody else.  It's all good!  God, humanity, the universe, the whole enchilada.

Evil doesn't exist.  Evil is an illusion.  It's all good.  God is good, and if he wants to prevent anything, he certainly can (and does).   Muslims believe that even though we have free will, God is aware of what we will do, and if Allah wanted to stop something from happening or force something to happen, he is certainly able to do so.  Therefore, everything occurs because God has allowed it to happen.  So do what thou wilt!  Not my will, but thine, oh lord.  We've learned about the holocaust.  We've learned about Jonestown.  We've learned about My Lai.  Nuclear explosions decimating Japan.  We've learned about slavery, the civil war, assassinations, the killing fields, Manson and his thrill kill cult, serial killers, mass murderers, cannibals, ongoing gun violence, on and on and on.  So we must not repeat those mistakes.  It's a mad world.  Emerging from madness into sanity takes time, for individuals, for societies, for the world at large.   The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice, Obama said.  I wouldn't mind speeding things up a little.  Evil exists in the now, but disappears from the eternal perspective.  Once we're all dead, our lives won't have meant shit.  But it's always now.

God doesn't exist. God is dead. But there are plenty to take his place. Old Gods die, and new ones sprout up to take their places.  You don't need God to be good, but it's an interesting thing to observe and think about, as kids, to make sense of the madness of adults.  God is hypnosis, a spell to connect people to their higher selves.  Of course, I know that God can be really real.  But someone playing the role can't actually make Putin stop his war on Ukraine, for example (right?).  God disappears in the trenches. Or rather, God becomes schizophrenic, of two minds, if not a confrontation between different Gods, altogether.  Also, there are ecological considerations, like thinning the herd, or protecting humanity from ecological collapse, which might be a consideration for The Almighty, which mere mortals would consider to be wicked (such as pandemics, or hurricanes, etc.).  A deity who can see alternative futures has a hell of a responsibility in influencing personal choices and political policies and what to think, say, and do.   (Breathing out hurricanes, jump-roping out some earthquakes, and such, lol.)

Humans have free-will.  So does God.  He doesn't have to be perfect, all the time.  The mind of God is accessible through books and movies and dreams (and computers?), so is not entirely inscrutable.  The law of karma purports to explain rewards and punishments across lifetimes.  But God is good, which to me sounds like he would forgive everybody.  The long-term, karmic, balance of heaven and hell, pleasantness and misery, pleasure and pain, could be really complex, in fact.  The sacrament of reconciliation is indispensable, for sinners, and to end the tit for tat.   Eye for an eye justice has been said to leave the whole world blind.  Fairness is a fiction.  Aside of course from everybody dying, eventually.  God could even be a sadist.  He must put up with a lot of aggravation.  A capitalist society, with everyone pursuing money, and "success" defined by prosperity, is dysfunctional, if not sick and twisted.  America has been called the Great Satan.  No country for old men.  Drugs make people turn to crime.  Sugar and alcohol can be pernicious.  Morality can derive from brain chemistry.  Depraved leaders deserve some blame.  NRA lobbyists, for example, aren't doing much to lesson opportunity and temptation of the mentally ill to commit mass shootings.  Rappers glorify violence.  Nature is red in tooth and claw.  Crimes of passion fight the sensibility of buddhist meditators.  The Catholics say everyone is born with original sin.  The Doors sang All the children are insane.  DNA makes some people more evil than others.  God help us.  Have mercy!

Fate, the stars, evolution, there's a lot at play.  Only God is good.  Be good.   

The theological odyssey of theodicy!  Theodicy is actually defined as "the vindication of divine goodness and providence in view of the existence of evil."   Justifying god's ways to man.  To justify or defend God in the face of evil.  If we hadn't eaten from the tree of knowledge of good and evil, say.   Or, if there is no sin (only crime). Yahweh's ways (his m.o.'s!?).  The face of evil, with an evil eye, or a snarled lip.  God wants everyone to be like Him, and so allows the process of trial and error, learning from our mistakes.  And, of course, without free will, we'd be automatons.  So there you have it.   

Some people blame evil on the devil.  Or Ahriman.  Or me, whatever I am.  virtually virtuous wicked Wiccans, with low MOA (monoamine oxidase A), haha.   And Lovecraft crafting love (Cthulhu the ancient nameless evil spawning love!).   Danger spawns clinging, and some women are turned on by evil (love-letters to criminals in prison).  Rape fetish and attraction to "gorillas."

Meaning

Humans are just animals, and our purpose is to seek genes and resources to survive and reproduce;  We are like worms, we are tubes, alimentary canals, that eat and excrete.  We are DNA programs, meat and bones, buckets of blood.  We have 5 senses (visual auditory tactile olfactory gustatory) with which we, put simply, move things around.  Life is logistics.  Physics.  We move bodies, objects, ideas, money, goods and services.  We are not souls.  We are bodies.  We are living things.  Our minds interpenetrate.  Humanity is a hive.  We do 11 things: read, watch, listen, write, talk, create, eat, exercise, sleep, work, and play.  And we eat and shit, drink and piss, wake and sleep, and fuck and raise children.  That’s it!  We suffer and seek relief.  Life is simple.  Be good.  Everyone is the same, has the same needs.  Don’t be evil.  We’re all on the same boat, spaceship earth, the global village.  Be a part of the solution, not the problem.  Leave the world better than you found it.  Seek progress, not perfection.  Be happy, do what you enjoy, have fun, play, laugh, and be kind, virtuous, compassionate, grateful, forgiving, sexy, and alive!  Be benevolent, beneficent.  Live and let live.  Live, love, and leave.  God bless.

But wait.  What is God, you say? I have the answer to that, too! From the theoretical definitions to the historical and geographic variety of deities, to the practical and factual reality of Higher Power(s):  God is love, seems to be the first and most important thing.  To love, and be loved in return.  Love is wanting others to be happy.  More joy, less suffering.   What makes us happy?  What imparts gladness, glee, and glow?  A provisional list: Sex, humor, money, health, safety, drugs, nature, good food, friendship, leisure and recreation, variety, travel, restaurants, swimming pools, entertainments, libraries, books, magazines, news, blogs, internet, music, podcasts, movies, shows, videos, exercise endorphins, a hobby, volunteering, personal growth, charity, warmth, kindness, gratitude, optimism, love, compassion…  Suffering requires compassion: sympathetic pity and concern for the sufferings and misfortunes of others; Unselfish membership in a community of mutual aid.  Gaining clarity and insight into what is making you unhappy and grokking effective remedies can be attained through meditation.  Well-being can be had, and wisdom derives from both error and lessons from masters.  

So who is this God? This Allah, Yahweh, Father, Son, Holy Spirit, Brahma, Shiva, Vishnu, Morpheus, Ra, Zeus, Quetzalcoatl, Ganesha, Hanuman, Krishna, Ahura Mazda, Eshara, Shara, Hara, Ara, Unkulunkulu, Sahasranama, Bog, Shangdi, Waheguru, Indra, Odin, Adi Da, Tara, and Flying Spaghetti Monster?  Are all these names describing the same thing?  Why not!  Let's just assume it's all me.  All you.  All everybody.  I like syncretism. YHWH or Jealous is Reality, Nature, All, Life, The Universe, and Everything.  Einstein's God, the God of Spinoza, this Being/Spirit/Person is A Higher Power, A Supreme Being, principal object of faith, and source of all moral authority.  God is a genie, a Santa, for adults.  Love-bliss, primarily.  Love comes in many forms: Caritas, agape, philia, eros, etc...  Love believes all things.  Me, myself, and I.  But God is also all possibility, infinite, always and everywhere, omniscient, omnipresent, omnipotent.  He (or She) can do anything, is almighty, all-powerful, and therefore can be an affliction, the little man in your head, who can hear and answer prayers, a telepath.  He is invisible, invincible.  Everything that happens is the will of God.  Jesuits endeavor to "see god in all things."  God knows everything, has made all mistakes, is righteous, and holy.  This know-it-all of knowledge, wisdom, and understanding, is good, better, best, perfect.  God is great.  God is not bad, never evil, is just and fair, merciful and forgiving, kindly, loves everyone, and created the universe, and paradise, heaven, utopia.  He is blessed, sacred, sanctified, consecrated, hallowed, venerated, revered, deific and divine.  God is your better self, a self-help process.  Only God is good.  He is good, a guide, a guard.  God is an ideal, a role to play, an identity, a status.   God is like the highest level of a video game.  Almighty God is a living man, and our Better Angels.  He is the source of all things good, deserving of all glory, honor, and praise.  God is grandiose, a king of kings, an emperor, the ruler and lord and most high.  God is the shit.  God is the greatest conceivable existent.  God is the man upstairs, the big cheese, the big kahuna, and a slave to all.  Gospel is God's spell.  God is a man of war, the prince of peace.  The alpha and omega.  Conception and death.  The big bang and the end of time.  And all points in between.  Or maybe time immemorial, time without beginning, and time without end, forever and ever, perpetually and always, constantly, in any case, interminably, for good, without fail.

Far and away, above and beyond, the great man is incomprehensible, incorporeal, self-contained, creator, destroyer, preserver, enlightenment nirvana and bliss, and immanent and transcendent, and a stunningly visual eidetic genius telepath, who makes the world in his image, because Reality is all the god there ever is.  God is truth, science, honesty, sincerity.  Atheism is a path to God.  God can be real or virtual, actual or an imaginary delusion.  We are all loved children of a loving God.  God is all the conceptions ever made of him, and more.  God is a growing concept, and all in all is all we are.  God is humor, comedy, satire, jokes, and jest.  God is warmth, friendship, and community.  God is all you ever wanted, the answer to your wildest dreams.  Not just a word, or a game (but those, too).   Yoga is a path to God.  And you'll arrive at where you are, always already there.  Do you not know that you are not your own?  You are possessed, an avatar, a vessel, perfect just the way you are, numinous, filled with the presence of divinity, little old boring stupid you.   Even ire, spite, malice, vengeance, wrath can be Godly.  God is a man of war.  Goodwill toward all and malice toward none.  War is the art of deception.  And that's the truth.  Alive, awake, aware.  L' Chaim!  To life!  Seize the day!  God's tool, an instrument of his will.  Love, reign o'er me!  Buddha is my buddy.  Nobody's perfect, except maybe God at His best.  You're just a human, just a body, just you.  Islam means submission.  Vanity, all is vanity.  Self-apotheosis, we become what we pretend to be, even if there is no-self, no immortality, and you are empty, aside from being one with the universe: all things good, beautiful, noble, pure, and true.  All the world's a stage, with a Gaudience!  To thine own self be true! :-). God might not think of himself as God?  just a thought.  You have freedom.  You can play any role you like!  God am does not equal goddamn.

Life is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing, says the bard.   Death is an experience felt by a genius, full of peace and quiet, signifying everything.  

God is an imaginary entity, with powers, properties, and characteristics, on which we project our ideals.   The embodiment of our superego, our conscience, necessary for wish-fulfillment, like safety or healing or virtue.   I don't want to be a slave, or be seen as responsible for evil, or have prayers invade my head, or be in hell... but I do want to be good.   So there it is.   Maybe I want to be better than God, lol.   I've asked my genie for my 3 wishes: 1. World Peace, 2. Basic Need met for everyone, and 3. Libraries, Internet, Education available to all.  Doable!!   Earth is our Heaven.  Pretty much anywhere else in the entire universe is an inhospitable Hell!  For God to be real, it has to become Reality itself, and Identity: pantheism and self-apotheosis.   Otherwise, who the hell are you submitting to??   Long live the Flying Spaghetti Monster!!  And You!  You alone are the holy one, you alone are the lord, you alone are the most high.
